Jay-Z, Bono, The Edge, Rihanna - Stranded

Here's a performance of the Haiti aid track "Stranded". Got to say it's pretty impressive considering how quickly it's been knocked together. Shame they couldn't keep Rihanna away from proceedings but it's all for a good cause

Go purchase the song on iTunes. All proceeds go to help Haiti via Partners In Health.

Jay-Z - On to the Next One

Jay-Z is opening up the new year with another video from his album. Doesn't he stop?! The track is produced by Mr Swizz Beatz (I wonder if I will hear this in a club).

Is it just me, or does this track get a little bit irritating? Oh well on to the next one.

Jay-Z & Nas - Empire State of Mind Remix?!

Back when the tracklist for Blueprint 3 was announced, you may remember I got a lil bit excited because as I mentioned in my review, I expected Nas to be on it...I mean come on, it just makes sense!

Anyway I got over that, in time, and was nicely surprised with the Alicia Keys assisted version.

According to the rumour mill over at allhiphop.com though, there is a remix in the works featuring Nas which may be released next year. Word is that Nas was originally meant to feature but was unavailable at the time. Another reason could be that Jay didn't want his shine stolen if Nas came stronger (see Black Republican for example!).

So i'll be keeping my ear out and let's be hoping it happens. Until then here's one of the few examples we have of 2 of the greatest on the same track together.

Jay-Z Judges TV "Battle"

Jay-Z popped in to TV show Much On Demand last week and judged a freestyle battle between 2 randoms who seem to have been picked from anywhere. In a nutshell the girl choked and the guy jus threw out some writtens. This just highlighted to me again that a lot of people, even ones who claim to be rappers have no idea what a F R E E S T Y L E is.

For those who don't know what i'm talking about, the girl gave it a shot but she was obviously nervous and might as well have stood there pickin her nose for 30 seconds. We can't hate on that though because she was trying. As for the dude...boy...he basically misunderstood the meaning of freestyle and despite being called out tried to pull the wool over everyone's eyes.

Just to break it down, a freestyle is a rap which is made up on the spot, with the lyrics coming straight from the top of your head. The topics will have something to do with the environment you are in, something you can see around you or a response to something that has just been said, proving that this is spontaneous. Sounds tough huh?! That's because it is and it's a skill, one that not everybody has. I can't do it myself, my mind is about a bar too slow!

Anyway, so what some people do is memorise lyrics which they have written previously and then use them in these situations and pass them off as being "freestyles". This is seen in full effect in this video. Apologies for anybody with a full understanding previously but it is clear from all the radio shows I have listened to and gigs that I have been to that some people still don't get it!

So, enough of the rant and here is the video. Watch out for Jay-Z handing out a massive dose of sarcasm.

My highlights...

* 0:40 "she got all black everything on so she gets a point already"
* The girl on the right's face at 2:10, she's lovin it!
* 2:36-2:56 Jay calls him out...
J: "come on you know what i mean, you've prepared this..."
S: "no, no speech, no preparation"
J: "then you're great!!"
S: "so are you!"
J: "I know i'm great" ...LOL

Jay-Z feat Alicia Keys - Empire State of Mind Official Video

Ok i'm not goin to say much about this because we've already covered it and shown the live version but here's the official video release.

As usual I do have one issue...can someone tell ms Keys she doesn't have to be stuck to that bloody piano in every single song she's in!! We get it by now, you actually play and you are talented, either get a chair and sit down and play properly or just ditch it! ...ok rant over. woohsah!!

Empire State of Mind - Live on Jonathan Ross

So here's Jay Z's performance of Empire State of Mind (as mentioned in the review below). Hats off to Bridget Kelly for outshining Alicia Keys on her part! Watch for her in the future, apparently a new signing under Hov's new label.

Blueprint 3 - LB's Verdict

After sitting on it for a few days and giving it some heavy rotation I feel I can now give a proper judgement of Jay-Z’s 11th album, The Blueprint 3.

So where do we start, is this to be another classic in the vein of the 1st Blueprint album or a misguided collection of hit and miss like its sequel?

Let’s get into it. The album kicks off on a good note with What We Talkin About, which sets the tone for the rest of the album lyrically, Hov seems in a determined mood brushing off the naysayers and once again letting you know why he is still at the top of the game.

Thank You comes next with its laid back, celebratory horns and Jiggaman steps up a gear, once again shutting down his opponents with a smooth swagger announcing “I was gonna kill a couple rappers but they did it to themselves I was gon’ do it with the flow But they did it with their sales”.

If you have been near a radio in the last couple of months you will have no doubt heard the first 2 singles DOA and Run This Town. Personally I need to let these rest for a minute because any attraction I had to them in the beginning has quickly worn off. DOA due to so many listens and Run This Town due to the fact I can’t take any more of Rihanna’s painful vocals.

Empire State of Mind featuring Alicia Keys was initially a massive disappointment to me before I had even heard it. I read an early tracklist for the album which listed Nas as a feature and had NY State of Mind 3 running through my mind....imagine that! Well, no Nas and a different vibe to the aforementioned NY classics but I was won over. Opening with Travis Barker-esque drums ala Rihanna’s Umbrella, Jay champions his City ably assisted by Alicia. It’s no surprise this has become a hit in its own right. Check the video in the next post for the live performance on Jonathan Ross with show stealer Bridget Kelly who will make you say Alicia who?! (as well as a few other things...put your tongue away n stop gawpin!)

On with the album...As Real As It Gets is a solid track featuring Young Jeezy, sometimes i can’t stand Jeezy but he’s palatable on this one.

On To The Next One is probably the 1st club track on the album with a bass heavy Swizz Beats production, Jiggaman procedes to let you know what is no longer in fashion and how he stays on top of what’s hot.

A Star Is Born produced by Kanye is a wicked track with Mr Carter giving props where he feels due. Even some of his longtime haters (i.e 50 Cent, Mobb Deep) get positive mentions. My highlight on this track is how he takes what was once a major diss from Nas, “Eminem murdered you on your own sh!t”, and gives the man praise. ““Wayne did a milli, 50 did a milli, ‘Ye too But what Em did was silly. The white boy blossomed After Dre endorsed him His flow on “Renegade” – fuckin’ awesome Applaud ‘em.”.

Off That, Venus Vs Mars and Reminder are Timbaland’s offerings and although none of them leap out as some of Tim’s best work, each are worth a listen. Off That is much in the vein of On To The Next with Drake possibly being underused just on hook duty. Venus Vs Mars is a fun male/female clash over a brooding beat. Reminder is just that, if you maybe forgot or for some reason didn’t know why and how the man is at the top of the game, this will tell you why!

One of my favourite tracks has to be Already Home. The beat took a minute to win me over but lyrically its Fiyah. I’d say this tune sums up the tone Jay comes with for most of the album, brushing off his critics directly again even using their own barbs against them “Oh they call me a camel, but I mastered the drought, what the fuck I’m an animal, half man, half mammal””. Perhaps my only gripe is Kid Cudi only being used for a hook.

This leaves 3 tracks, Hate with Kanye West which i’m still undecided on, its got a quirky switched up flow but not a favourite. So Ambitious i’m trying hard to like but as with alot of recent Neptunes productions I feel a bit let down. Forever Young feat Mr Hudson...I hate it. What more can I say?!

My Favourite Ad of the Year

If you have never owned a Jay-Z album or seen a cover at least then this is going to be completely lost on you...for those that recognise though, this is as slick as it gets.

The recurring thought I keep having is did he live up to his "1 take Hov" tag when shooting this?! Impressive if he did!

Jay Gets Bill's Attention

Bill O'Reilly shows his love for Jay-Z by advertising his album for him in the only way he knows best.

Gotta love Bill's love and enthusiasm for hiphop. Unlike when he takes aim at "gnoz" (nas) it doesn't quite sound as funny when he mentions Jay's name, it's still good to see he's listening though.

Blueprint 3 - Cover Art

So here is the cover for Blueprint 3....and what do we think?!

hmm...well my first reaction is maybe he's been hanging out with his little brother a bit too long. I believe this is the 1st album he's put out without his own mug on the front. I guess he feels safe knowing the world knows who he is now even Coldplay and Oasis fans due to his chum Chris Martin and his "beef" with the manc monkeys.

In the days when I actually used to buy CDs I always used to take out the sleeve and look through the booklet 1st, or if you're like Jay, read through the credits (volume 3 intro...do you listen to music, or do you just skim through it?). This looks more like one of the images you would find on the inside of those cover booklets. Thinking about the evolution of CDs to Ipods though, I suppose it'll look good on the Ipod screen.

I guess you could look at it in an artsy way and say...maybe the instruments all blended into the white background are representing the variety and depth of the background production, whilst the red stripes represent Hov's vivid stamp on top of this.

Well..who cares, end of the day if the music's on par with BP1 and half of BP2, i'll take it.

Game Jay Z Diss....

First off where did this this really spring from? No really as at last count Game was still after 50 & the G u not crew. Questions to be asked: Will this stay on wax (well mp3 gotta keep up with the times) or will we have to loose another black music icon this year? Has Game bitten off more that he can spit with going after jigga? I mean Game does spit sick sicks bars for hours BUT jigga like Eminem & Nas when backed into a corner go back to there grass roots & eat eat eat mc!! & The final & important question will Jay even reply? Check it out & tell us what you think...... I give you I'm so wavey Six-3 aka Dylons Hype man

Jay-Z - Death Of Autotune Video

So here it is, the first video from the Jiggaman's upcoming Blueprint 3 album (slated for a September 11th release).

Co-starring Lyor Cohen, Harvey Keitel and Lebron James, Jay keeps it simple and shows his targets (including Cristal) he still kills ants with sledgehammers...or explosions in this case. Still feeling this tune, only minor gripe for me is i don't like the singy singy bit but i can allow it.
