Its Gotta Be The Ads

From back in the day watching Spike Lee aka Brooklyn & Michael Jordan "it's gotta be the shoes" ads to The Nike freestyle ad & even the latest Hyperize 80s Rap group spoof & the Nike 6.0 skateboard ad with Ice Cube Nike always seem to understand there audience & are just funny to watch.

This is no different, Lebron & Kobe puppets with Krs 1 as Santa, take on a trash talking Lupe Fiasco as Blitzen

Enjoy

A Kick in the Nuts

Let me start off by saying I play football and used to play for a team a couple of months ago and I would touch wood every time, that a lethal powerhouse kick don't hit me in the nuts. Just looking at this makes me say ouch that's got to hurt.

LL COOL J Denied Entry to the Hall of Fame

Hip Hop legend LL Cool J was not named as one the artists selected for entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, (you may be thinking, who cares?) it was announced recently. LL's career began in 1984 and this is the first year he is available to make the cut. He was joined by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kiss, Donna Summer and Laura Nyro as other acts who failed to make the cut. Personally I would have thought at least the Chilli Peppers would get in.

Instead, The Stooges, ABBA and Genesis will be honored with entry into the Hall therefore only 2 Hip Hop acts: Grangmaster Flash and the Furious 5, and Run D.M.C. are the only Hip Hop acts in the Rock n Roll hall of frame. You can say what you want about LL but he is a big icon in Hip Hop, known for his longevity - as well as being the early face of Def Jam. He was the 1st artist to sign to the legendary rap label and helped bring Hip Hop to the mainstream with his Ladies Love Cool James appeal.

The Queens emcee has released 12 albums (eight of which have gone platinum and the others LL by many standards were poor lol) and has been awarded 2 grammys. Currently, LL is starring alongside Chris O'Donnell in the crime series, NCIS: Los Angeles.

With Only 2 Hip Hop acts in the Rock n Roll Hall of Frame its begs to ask where have they been the past couple of years as Hip Hop got more mainsteam. In musical terms though Hip Hop is still a young genre and maybe this will change in the near future.

Well I have a few LL tracks I like but this one comes to mind for a posses cut.

And the Best Selling Rapper of the Decade is....

Nielsen Soundscan has recently revealed figures for the best selling albums of the 2000s. Focusing on hip hop, Eminem was the highest selling artist mainly due to the massive selling Marshall Mathers LP (10,240,000 copies sold) and The Eminem Show (9,799,000 copies sold).

It's no great surprise that Em has sold so many with his massive crossover appeal (i'm not gonna go there at the moment and explain why...that's a whole other post!) but some might be surprised at other big entries.

Next most popular rap artist was Nelly....yes Nelly! His debut album Country Grammar sold a massive 8,461,000 back in 2000.

It's amazing to look at these numbers in comparison to album sales nowadays. The whole music industry has shifted so much, for example Eminem's latest top selling release sold around 1.5 million and in today's number that's a big numbers.

We are now in the digital age and consumers seem to cherry pick the singles they like off of an album rather than purchasing entire albums containing what they might consider throwaway tracks. There is evidence in this with the high single sales seen for the likes of the Black Eyed Peas, Soulja Boy and Flo Rida who each sold around 5 million copies of a single alone.

Personally I see the shift in the way music is being bought has pluses and negatives. On the up side, artists are being made to up their game and produce a consistent effort when it comes to albums because if they don't the consumer will ignore the fraff. On the other hand I kind of miss the feeling of getting the album then sitting down and listening to it front to back and really taking it in. This can still be done of course but I don't know, it's just not the same...you have to move with the times though.

All I will ask is please do not contribute to the likes of Soulja Boy being near the top of a best selling list come 2010!

The One Hit Wonders List

This made me giggle for some time as it is so true. Billboard came up with a long line of "One Hit Wonders" (need a clue, try Fat Joe lol). Yep it's those artists that made a big single and then fell off after that.

You may debate the fact that just because an artist does not sell well doesn't mean they're not good, or is it a marketing thing? The days of Mase from Bad Boy for example have gone and his 5 minute come back which flopped(I swear it was in his contract to do 3 albums).

Question is, if an artist is more popular than your normal joe bloggs artist does this make the popular artist any better as they have jumped into the mainsteam?

Ummm I could also ask is it mainsteam vs underground? Therefore when an artist makes it to the mainstream are they selling out?

I look at it this way, if for example a rapper is rapping about hard times and selling and hustling then a couple of years later the rapper has made it into the mainstream and not living the so called hard times, what is he or she going to rap about? Should they upgrade or go by the saying 'If it ain't broke, don't try to fix'?

Yes this is a rant but blame it on the person in my ear hole claiming that Lil Wayne is the best rapper alive (okay yeah whateva and my name is Bill Gates!).

Here is the One Hit Wonders list.

Plus an added bonus for all the Fat Joe fans lol...

"A six-foot guard, from Georgetown"

There's a reason Patti LaBelle offered to sing the anthem in exchange for two tickets -- although she ultimately passed, unable to get out of a prior engagement. There's a reason you couldn't hear the PA guy after he said, "a six-foot guard, from Georgetown, number 3," as the crowd roared & lost itself,

THE ANSWER IS BACK IN PHILLY.... (said in the style of the Rock)

Sad to say that A.I's former team the Denver Nuggets weren’t feeling as sentimental & dealt the Sixer's there 10th loss in a row. Some reports say this was Iverson's last chance at playing at this level!! I disagree all he had to do at his retirement press conference was put his ego in check & say “I just play my part to help a team towards winning a ring” & his phone would have been ringing with offers.

Diddy - The Model Apprentice

Fellow Don Mr2Drinks was having a rant earlier about Diddy, his exact words being "he can't rap, dance or sing and he should sit behind the desk and do his artists a favour and hush his gums". I can't disagree with any of that, but when you think of what he is good at, sheer business nouse is clearly his forte.

A few days ago Sean Combs appeared on American shopping channel HSN (Home Shopping Network) to flog his I Am King fragrance. You could say he did rather well, selling out 3,000 units in 15 minutes! At $57 a pop that's not a bad quarter of an hours work.

Watching this reminded me of the shopping channel tasks in The Apprentice series, on this evidence future candidates could do with taking notes. You may dislike him, and I have been told by someone who has dealt with him in person, he's not the most likeable of people, but his back-to-the-floor tactics have worked and it is this kind of move that has kept him on top for so long.

If only he could come up with a formula for selling his artists as well as he does his fragrances and clothes etc.

Bye Bye Lily Allen

Just when I thought today was going to be as depressing as the weather is right now, I came across a bit of good news!

Lily Allen has apparently decided to 'disappear' for a while. Following wishes...I mean rumours, that she was going to quit the music scene Lily has confirmed that after March 2010 she will be taking a year or 2 off from music. During this time she is planning to set up a new record label and a fashion shop with her sister.

It hasn't been long since she decided to stop using the internet and blackberry as a means of enhancing her presence, saying "I've decided to stop being so hypocritical and consume things and pay for them. I buy music in vinyl and buy newspapers. I support the industry I'm in.

Riiight...ok...does she realise there have been at least 3 major formats to buy music on since vinyl? I guess they are not as 'cool' though hey?

I'm sure some of you will probably be thinking whoa why the hate?! Well I guess Lily is like olives covered in marmite, you either really dislike her or if you don't, you should!

My main issue is that to me she is one of these celebs who is famous for no particular reason, having no obvious talent. Yes she has released music that has sold masses but as someone I know put it best "she talks a good song". Can you even call that singing?

So anyway whether you are a fan or not there you go, Lily won't be around for a little while...excuse me whilst I just go and smile for a bit.

Karate Kid Remake for 2010

The Karate Kid is coming back with a remake starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan and being produced by Will Smith.

The storyline is staying the same. A new kid in town (Smith) is bullied by his classmates and learns martial arts (in this case kung fu, not karate... I wonder if they will change the title to Kung Fu Kid?) from the maintenance man (Chan) so he can defend himself against the students of Li Quan Ha’s Fighting Dragon school.

Question is and I know you're wondering too, will it have the wax on and wax off?! lol…. This might ruin my past of the old school Karate Kid (Daniel son). Come on don’t act as if you didn't watch it!

Below are the first pictures of the production, due to be released next year in June. P.S Will Smith is looking kinda old, sorry Will you’re my boy, well kinda as I still have not forgiven you for Hancock (first 45mins was good then it went sour) and Seven Pounds of….
