Tactical Nuclear Penguin - The 'World's Strongest Beer'

Beer...Some people love it, some hate it. Personally i'm not a big fan but don't mind the odd one every now and then. Generally beer and lager are drinks with quite a low alcohol content if you compare it to wines and spirits. That is until now.

BrewDog who are based in Scotland and are not new to controversial beers, with their previous releases being the 18.2% beer 'Tokyo' and the low alcohol 'Nanny State'. Tactical Nuclear Penguin though puts those in the shade by being the first 32% beer.

Hold up...32% beer?! Surely a pint of that would have even got Bill Werbeniuk wasted! (If you haven't heard of him, google it!). This beer is not supposed to be drank in the traditional way though, a warning label on the bottle instructs "This is an extremely strong beer; it should be enjoyed in small servings and with an air of aristocratic nonchalance. In exactly the same manner that you would enjoy a fine whisky, a Frank Zappa album or a visit from a friendly yet anxious ghost."

BrewDog managing director says "This beer is about pushing the boundaries, it is about taking innovation in beer to a whole new level." If you say so James. Not being a beer connoisseur myself I couldn't give a Castlemaine XXXX. Tactical Nuclear Penguin will apparently be on sale in limited supply for £30 a bottle.

I'll have a JD and coke please...

Disney's First Black Princess

Disney's latest film sounds like the usual Disney production with it's fairytale story of magic and princesses but look a bit further into it and it is a historic release. There have been 8 previous Disney princesses but this film brings us their first ever black princess.

Princess Tiana is voiced by singer and actress Anika Nonie Rose who says "It's a really wonderful thing for children to be able to look at this princess and say, 'it looks just like my friend - she's a princess too,'". "It's a long time coming but I'm glad it's here."

I'd have to agree with her, but more than that, for all those little girls (and some bigger ones who I know still love the Disney films!) to have a character that they can watch and feel a connection with, knowing that not all princesses are blonde and blue eyed.

Bonnie Greer alluded to the fact that although it's a bold move by Disney, they are never going to miss a trick when it comes to making more money. "Since Disney is always looking at the bottom line, they figured it's about time,".

With that being said, credit where it is due, although a lot of people will probably think 'what's the fuss?', the film has been in production since before Obama came into power and it's good to know moves like this are happening so that in future nobody will bat an eye.

Apparently the process of finishing the film was a tough process as the company gathered prominent black organisations and individuals to view the film and give their views on whether any of it could come across as offensive. Whichever bright spark did that may want to come and advise the UK government too rather than have them dictate to us what is PC or not on racial issues, seemingly without asking the people it would effect in the first place.

Anyway, in summary, well done Disney and I shall ask my niece whether the film was any good!

Jay-Z & Nas - Empire State of Mind Remix?!

Back when the tracklist for Blueprint 3 was announced, you may remember I got a lil bit excited because as I mentioned in my review, I expected Nas to be on it...I mean come on, it just makes sense!

Anyway I got over that, in time, and was nicely surprised with the Alicia Keys assisted version.

According to the rumour mill over at allhiphop.com though, there is a remix in the works featuring Nas which may be released next year. Word is that Nas was originally meant to feature but was unavailable at the time. Another reason could be that Jay didn't want his shine stolen if Nas came stronger (see Black Republican for example!).

So i'll be keeping my ear out and let's be hoping it happens. Until then here's one of the few examples we have of 2 of the greatest on the same track together.

Lupe Fiasco - Enemy of The State: A Love Story - Mixtape

Yesterday Lupe Fiasco released his latest, much anticipated mixtape, Enemy of The State: A love Story. Being a big fan I downloaded soon as I could and shamefully I have only been able to listen to it through twice so far!

As Lupe followers will know, when he's in the mood he really goes in with his metaphors. In this mixtape he is in that mood! There are so many subliminals that you will want to listen multiple times and find yourself pulling up tracks to catch them. Personally I love this, if that's not your bag, try checking out the likes of Gucci Mane instead...

Enjoy! :)

The Story of Rom Houben

Looking at the news last night I heard about this story and now instantly have a new biggest fear to go alongside being buried alive! Recently it has come to light that a Belgian Man named Rom Houben had been wrongly diagnosed as being in a coma for the past 23 years. His entire body was disabled following a car crash and he was believed to be in a "vegetative state" (i hate that term).

For all these years since the accident he had laid there seeing and hearing people come and go, without being able to react or communicate. Even having to hear of his own father's death and not being able to even cry but the feelings and thoughts are still being processed in his brain.

I can't begin to imagine how frustrated, angry, depressed he must have been. Since the truth was revealed via a brain scan, it has been found that Rom is able to communicate using a special keyboard. I for one would be interested in buying his book if he ever managed to write one.

Mr Houben's story was revealed in a paper written by Steven Laureys, a doctor at Liege University who wrote a recent paper that detailed the case.

In it, Mr Laureys said that in about 40% of cases in which people are classified as being in a vegetative state, closer inspection reveals signs of consciousness.

Let's hope that these closer inspections become standard practice and in future nobody else will have to live in such a nightmare.

Converse All Star Strap Hi Leather

I'll be honest, when I was young and Converse Chuck Taylors were all the rage, I hated them, I just wasn't a fan. Fast forward quite a few years and I've got to say my opinion has changed a lot and i'm the proud owner of quite a few pairs.

Anyway here is the latest release of their classic and it gets the thumbs up from me. As with many of the colourways and versions that have been released over the last few years, this is not a radical departure from the original, more like a subtle improvement.

In leather and adding two straps round the ankle, the new design is a must have for fans and collectors of All-Stars.

Boy Blue ent. Presents - PIED PIPER

Choreograpy by Kenrick "H2O" Sandy, Music by Michael "Mikey J" Asante.

The show, originally produced by Theatre Royal Stratford East in 2006 where it thrilled sell-out houses, closely follows the structure of the original poem by Robert Browning but this version of the morality tale is told from an edgy, modern perspective.

Not being bias because these are my boys H20 and Mikey J, this show is for anybody who wishes to be entertained. The music is great and the dancing has you wishing you had a remote control to rewind parts. The play is an updated and remixed version of the classic Pied Piper and has the Pied Piper battling the Asbo's as they cause trouble on our streets. He fears no evil and sets the trend to clean up our streets, as he starts a revolution.

Following a successful run earlier this year in the Barbican Theatre, the Olivier Award-winning hip-hop street dance spectacular Pied Piper returns this Christmas due to popular demand for a four-week run from Thursday 10 December 2009 – Sunday 3 January 2010.

I've seen this twice already and have already got my ticket to see it again, this will have you getting up off your seat and have you amazed.

Zero Punctuation Games Reviews

Taken from his own words... Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw is "a British-born, currently Australian-based writer and gamer with a sweet hat and a chip on his shoulder. When he isn't talking very fast into a headset mic he also designs freeware adventure games and writes the back page column for PC Gamer, who are too important to mention us. His personal site is www.fullyramblomatic.com."

Anyway, Zero Punctuation is his games review series, you will quickly notice the why it is named so when you check out the reviewing style. To put it simply, if you are tired of stuffy, witless or plain boring games reviews you need take a look. As well as being pretty damn funny, I usually find the reviews to be spot-on. He manages to find the annoyances and glitches in even your favourite games and as for games that are plain crap to begin with, well they get no mercy!

So, if you have never seen any before here are a couple of examples!...oh and by the way, if you are offended by strong language, you may well be better off making a cuppa instead...and maybe you should go and lighten up a bit...

Haye vs Valuev - LB's Verdict

And the new....!!

So David Haye talked the talk and he has now walked the walk. In beating the Russian giant Nikolay Valuev last night he has become the 1st British Heavyweight Champion since Lennox Lewis in 2003.

In the fight preview yesterday I stated that if David Haye could fight a disciplined fight and not succumb to his gung-ho urges, he could do it. This is exactly what happened and technically speaking it was a perfectly executed fight.

From the opening round it was clear that Haye was going to try to nullify Valuev's massive physical advantage by being as evasive as possible, and staying out of reach. In between dodging, weaving and sidestepping, Haye did manage to land the more telling blows with some sharp 1-2 combos.

In the middle rounds Valuev looked to have gotten the hang of the game as he continued to plod forward and managed to tag Haye a couple of times but not with anything that would trouble him. The bigger blows although coming infrequently were still coming from Haye and his apparently questionable stamina (not sure where that came from as it seems he learnt that lesson in the defeat to Thompson years ago) was nowhere to be seen.

Going into the last round it was clear that the fight had been a close affair, but this was chess not chequers and Valuev had not landed anything of note. In the 12th, Haye got the closest to backing up his claims of a being able to win by KO. He rocked the giant with a left then a right and as Valuev stumbled against the ropes couldn't quite finish him off.

So has this victory silenced the naysayers? I would like to think so but you can't please everyone. I've been seeing comments saying it was a boring fight and Haye was lucky and negative. To these comments i'd say go away and learn about boxing, this is not computer game bout. Do you expect him to stand toe to toe and trade with a man 7 stones heavier and with a massive reach advantage? Haye had a game plan and the discipline to stick to it. Add to this the fact he won a points decision in Germany which has always been a notoriously difficult place to get a fair decision, and the fact he had a suspected broken right hand since the 3rd round.

Next up is a contractually obliged defence and John Ruiz, which should hopefully and probably end up in a spectacular knockout win for Haye, then bring on the Klitschkos! Heavyweight boxing just got exciting again.

Haye vs Valuev - Preview

Well fight fans, the most anticipated heavyweight boxing match up for years is nearly here. Tonight we will find out whether David Haye will backup his words and reinvigorate a whole boxing division, or be made to painfully eat his own words by the man he has branded a circus freak. Let's get ready to ruumblllee!!

As the weeks have gone by there has been a lot of hype and opinion about how this fight could go and it seems to have captured everyone's imagination. The majority of people I have spoken seem to feel David Haye has gone too far and maybe he doesn't have the right to say some of the things he has been saying. I disagree, he has been doing it purely for promotion which I think you will find has worked a treat. Another thing though is that you have to give Haye respect for having the attitude of fighting anyone, anywhere.

As far as predictions for how the fight could go, it's a real tough one. There are so many factors and a lot of them will depend on how Haye chooses to fight tactically. Currently the voting on secondsout.com has the result predicted as follows...
24% - Valuev KO
33% - Haye KO
16% - Valuev Points
27% - Haye Points
This just shows how split the opinion is on how it could go. It truly is an intriguing match up.

I believe Evander Holyfield, who recently lost a controversial points decision to Valuev, has given some good advice for the way for Haye to slay the giant. His tactics of being patient and waiting for Valuev to throw a shot, then slipping that shot and landing a few of his own nearly paid off and should have done. Using lots of lateral movement so that Valuev can't get set and keep moving in and out. The question is, has Haye got the patience to execute this kind of strategy? Or will his gung-ho urges to throw bombs be his undoing? Only time will tell!

I'm never one to sit on the fence so here is my prediction...Haye to win a tight points decision despite taking a knock down.

Jay-Z Judges TV "Battle"

Jay-Z popped in to TV show Much On Demand last week and judged a freestyle battle between 2 randoms who seem to have been picked from anywhere. In a nutshell the girl choked and the guy jus threw out some writtens. This just highlighted to me again that a lot of people, even ones who claim to be rappers have no idea what a F R E E S T Y L E is.

For those who don't know what i'm talking about, the girl gave it a shot but she was obviously nervous and might as well have stood there pickin her nose for 30 seconds. We can't hate on that though because she was trying. As for the dude...boy...he basically misunderstood the meaning of freestyle and despite being called out tried to pull the wool over everyone's eyes.

Just to break it down, a freestyle is a rap which is made up on the spot, with the lyrics coming straight from the top of your head. The topics will have something to do with the environment you are in, something you can see around you or a response to something that has just been said, proving that this is spontaneous. Sounds tough huh?! That's because it is and it's a skill, one that not everybody has. I can't do it myself, my mind is about a bar too slow!

Anyway, so what some people do is memorise lyrics which they have written previously and then use them in these situations and pass them off as being "freestyles". This is seen in full effect in this video. Apologies for anybody with a full understanding previously but it is clear from all the radio shows I have listened to and gigs that I have been to that some people still don't get it!

So, enough of the rant and here is the video. Watch out for Jay-Z handing out a massive dose of sarcasm.

My highlights...

* 0:40 "she got all black everything on so she gets a point already"
* The girl on the right's face at 2:10, she's lovin it!
* 2:36-2:56 Jay calls him out...
J: "come on you know what i mean, you've prepared this..."
S: "no, no speech, no preparation"
J: "then you're great!!"
S: "so are you!"
J: "I know i'm great" ...LOL

DJ Nikki Beatnik - New Tune and Gig

Not one to keep quiet about a great tune if I hear one, checkout the new track from Beatnik (DJ Nikki and Statis). I've been playing it over and over this week and still got it on rotation. The swaying deep synth under the wicked soulful, london-tinged vocals has got my head nodding everytime. Anyway judge for yourself and checkout below the details of Beatnik performing tomorrow night in London.

If you are in town tomorrow night make sure you check out the All The Rage gig at Cargo where Beatnik will be performing as well as Janelle Monae and more. Also checkout the afterparty. Click the flyers below to see more details or check out the website

Here's a bonus of another Beatnik track ...

Beat this for a Halloween Trick

So Halloween has passed and seems to be getting bigger and wilder every year (in this country at least). I'm sure a few of you had some crazy costumes and maybe even pulled some funny stunts. For the best trick of the night though we go to the NBA for a game played on Halloween between Sacremento and the San Antonio Spurs.

So the Spurs are up by 3 points in the first quarter, Sacremento are on the attack, when the referee blows to pause play because a bat (how apt) has flown onto the court. In no time at all after play is held, Manu Ginobili swats the bat out of mid-air before picking it up and handing it to an official! If you don't believe me check the video and pic below.

As a precautionary measure Ginobili has been vaccinated for rabies but it is not thought that he has caught anything (apart from the bat). There are mixed reports about what happened to the bat but it looked pretty dead to me.

Chris Brown trying to Transform the past

Gotta say I’m liking the tune & the video is nice (only missing a guest spot from Optimus Prime) But when looking for this video I saw a lot of mixed reactions but not for the track more the artist?

Has the world not forgiven Chris for the Rhianna Incident? Without offending our female readers should that effect your judgement on how the tune sounds?

If he had done a line in the video saying sorry or had her in the video would that have made people think different?

Why is it that people are ready to fight Chris Brown over this yet Domestic violence happens everyday (sad to say) & small cases don’t make cover of The Sun, Heat & other such publications? I think we hold celebs in to high a light……..

What do you think????
